Azusa Man Threatening Nearby Schools
Earlier last week, a man threatened several schools, a hospital, and a shopping mall in the San Gabriel Valley via phone calls. This man was charged with nearly a dozen felonies in connection to these phone calls on Thursday. The man allegedly involved with these threatening phone calls to Southland Schools appeared in Superior Court today, but he did not enter a plea. He is currently still in custody with a $250,000 bail awaiting his arraignment on October 4 at the West Covina courthouse for six counts of making criminal threats and five counts of falsely reporting an emergency. Prosecutors have revealed that Cortez was convicted earlier this year in June for making a phony bomb threat in Pasadena. More recently on September 9th of this year, the Covina Police Department received a phone call from an anonymous caller claiming that he was at “Citrus Medical Center,” which doesn’t exist, with a n AK-47 and that he was ready to begin shooting. His latest crimes were last Thursday September 12, 2013 when Arcardia police had to search Arcardia High School after receiving many calls about someone having a gun on the campus. Cortez was taken into custody on Tuesday September 17, 2013 afternoon at about 4 p.m. after an FBI investigation. This man has a history of making false phone calls to the police concerning crimes that never happen, and law enforcement, as well as the residents in the San Gabriel Valley are happy that Cortez is finally in custody to face the many charges for his crimes.
